Illustration Style Academy™
Uncovering Your Aesthetics
In module 1 we address the 3 biggest myths associated with personal illustration style, allowing you to let go of old mindsets and barriers that could be stopping you from moving forward.
We then get to work, building up the foundations of your personal style. We’ll work through a series of exercises that will enable you to pinpoint the aspects of your personality and life experiences that are unique to you, and only you.
And then we translate your unique traits into visual attributes that will serve as the basis and foundation of your personal illustration style.
Finally, we will begin the process of creating your Personal Style Manifesto, which you will build upon as you progress through the course
Unpacking Your Taste
In module 2 we’ll do a comprehensive audit of your personal illustration inspirations, and the pieces that you find yourself naturally drawn to. This helps you understand your illustration within the context of other creatives, to help you better understand where you fit in.
We’ll walk through an exercise that enables you to distill the essence of what exactly it is that you're drawn to, teaching you how to make these elements your own, and relevant to your unique personality. This will help you ensure that you’re never copying or emulating another artist, and staying true to yourself.
We will then build upon your Style Manifesto, adding your new findings to help create a more robust foundation for your illustration style.
Forming Your Character Blueprint
This is where the magic happens, now it’s time to start bringing our illustration style to life by understanding how our Style Manifesto translates into character forms.
In module 3 we will workshop different character illustration styles, providing different examples of the various elements and components that make up a character.
We will make decisions around how to best express the various parts of your character through elements such as color, form, proportion and facial features, whilst remaining true to who you are, and your unique personality
After working through this lesson you will have a Character Blueprint which is the foundation of your character illustration style.
Creating Your Character Prototype
In the 4th module we do the work of bringing your character to life. By the end of this module you will have a completed Character Prototype, which can use as your baseline for all future illustration work.
We will expand upon the visual details of your character, by deciding on the right color palettes, fill & stroke, as well as shading techniques that make sense for your unique style.
We will also discuss which medium/s would be most appropriate for you, and think about the environmental/ background elements of your compositions.
Lastly we will create a Style Guide, that you will be able to keep close and reference in all your future illustration work, to help all your work feel cohesive and consistent.
